Wow, when I agreed to speak at the American Marketing Association‘s Digital Series I had no idea what I would be in for.  I had never given a presentation that was not to potential clients of Cardinal Digital Marketing.

Going into it, I thought it would be a breeze.  I mean, how hard can it be to stand up and talk about the stuff I know the most about for 30 minutes?  Well, apparently there is a ton of work that goes into preparing the presentation.  Putting together the topic name alone took an hour.  Once I had that, building out the outline for the presentation took half a day.

Finalizing the slides I was going to be using –  another 4 hours and then rehearsing the speech about 12 hours.  Altogether, the time invested was significant, but as I found out – the stress incurred from worrying about not making an ass out of myself was even more significant!

When the day finally came to present I was relieved.  Finally, I could present this bad boy and get it over with.  As it turns out, I didn’t do half bad ( as I have been told ).  Most of the nervousness that I had leading up to the event was not needed.  What the anxiety did do for me though was ensure that I rehearsed the speech to perfection and for that I am grateful.  It would appear that the proper amount of fear can be a benefit.

I now have a huge appreciation for those that make their living on the speaking circuit.  It takes a ton of time to plan, rehearse, and execute a proper presentation!  I have elected to take a few weeks off from speaking to see if it is something that I enjoy; that and the fact that my blood pressure probably couldn’t take another one of these too soon!
